I am currently advertising a PhD position in Geometric Group Theory in my research group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with starting date in October 2026. The position comes with a generous travel allowance and no compulsory teaching load. It is paid according to the German E13 75% TV-L pay grade. The expected duration is 3 years.
Potential topics for the PhD project include: metric spaces of non-positive curvature, group automorphisms, generalisations of Gromov-hyperbolicity, and the interplay between these concepts. However, broader interests are appreciated and encouraged.
Candidates should have successfully completed a master degree in mathematics by the starting date. Proficiency in the English language and a solid background in geometry and topology are expected. Basic knowledge of geometric group theory is particularly appreciated.
Applications should be submitted to the address elia.fioravanti[at]kit.edu and should consist of the following documents (as a single pdf file):
(1) A copy of your CV.
(2) A 1-page description of your mathematical interests and motivation; as part of this, you could mention a theorem that you find particularly beautiful or captivating and why.
(3) Academic transcripts of the courses taken during your university education, with grades where applicable.
(4) A pdf of your master's thesis, or a 1-page summary of its topic if it's still in progress.
(5) Two reference letters, to be submitted to the same address directly by the referees.
All documents must be received by the deadline of 13 March 2026. Please note that we will not contact referees to request letters on behalf of the applicants.
